What to plan

How you plan your menu is up to you.

Family eating dinner

Planning meals everyone enjoys means less fuss and less waste.

You can prepare a detailed menu plan, which includes breakfasts, lunches and dinners. If breakfast is simply toast or cereal, you might prefer to plan for lunches and dinners only. Or, if you would like to begin your menu planning activities slowly, just start with dinner. If you have a busy household, why not share the menu planning and the cooking between family members or flatmates?

Whichever menu planning option you choose, you will be taking positive steps to reduce your household’s food waste and your grocery bill. It is about making menu planning an enjoyable experience so it becomes a habit in your household.

One of the most important things to remember when planning your menu is to ensure you plan a healthy balanced diet that is made up of a variety foods from the five key food groups:

  • breads, cereals, rice and pasta
  • vegetables
  • fruits
  • milk, cheese and yoghurt
  • meat, fish, poultry, eggs and nuts

Visit Health and nutrition for more information on a balanced diet and serving sizes.
