OzHarvest staff member collects food from restaurant

Donating surplus food to charity helps people in need and keeps food out of landfill.

Key facts

  • More than 30 million meals delivered to people in need.
  • Approximately 56 tonnes of food rescued each week that would otherwise go to landfill.
  • Over 2,000 Donors with food delivered to over 600 agencies with our network of 26 vans on the road.

OzHarvest rescues good quality surplus food and redistributes it to feed those in need.

OzHarvest is the first perishable food rescue organisation in Australia collecting quality excess food from commercial outlets and delivering it, direct and free of charge, to close to 500 charities providing much needed assistance to vulnerable men, women and children across Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne and Newcastle.

OzHarvest is the only food rescue organisation in Australia collecting surplus food from all types of food providers including fruit and vegetable markets, supermarkets, hotels, wholesalers, farmers, stadiums, corporate events, catering companies, shopping centres, delis, cafes, restaurants, film and TV shoots and boardrooms.

OzHarvest's work has a four-fold impact:

  1. Food deliveries to charitable organisations enable them to provide a broad range of high quality food that was not available previously.
  2. Food deliveries to charities enable them to redirect vital funding into education, rehabilitation and other programs, which directly benefit their clients.
  3. By ensuring that good food is being eaten rather than going to landfill OzHarvest is minimising food waste and saving our environment by preventing tonnes of carbon emissions from polluting the atmosphere.
  4. Food donors benefit from reduced expenditure associated with the disposal of excess food, reduced food storage costs and the satisfaction of knowing they are making a valuable contribution to those in need in the local community.

How do I donate food to OzHarvest?

OzHarvest will pick up anything from quality surplus fresh fruit and veg, fresh meat, pre-prepared sandwiches and meals to delicious cupcakes or muffins that weren't sold that day. We can also collect dry goods.

OzHarvest does not collect shellfish nor cooked rice due to health and safety regulations.

OzHarvest operates in Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth, Canberra and Newcastle. If you or your company are holding an event and require food pick up immediately, please contact OzHarvest on 1800 108 006 or get in touch with our teams across the country by visiting our website

We also have a regional food rescue program called REAP. REAP is a simple three-step program for food rescue volunteers that helps them connect local food business donors with local charities. The team at OzHarvest HQ provides education, best practice examples and supports regional volunteers to have a positive impact on reducing food waste and hunger in their local areas. To find a full list of our REAP Chapters please visit the Reap website

OzHarvest Ambassadors

OzHarvest is a charity that is close to my heart. To take food waste which is so prevalent in today's society and to turn it around in order to feed those in need is a truly worthwhile cause which I support wholeheartedly.

It was a real privilege to work with OzHarvest as a beneficiary for our Bread for Change campaign. OzHarvest is one of those charities that we in the restaurant business are very proud to support.
