All businesses that sell or provide food can use our Your Business is Food program to reduce food waste.

The program is completely free and works by providing information, advice and resources, like take away stickers, posters and coasters, designed to help you waste less food while engaging both staff and customers in the process.

The most recent Love Food Hate Waste Tracking Survey asked customers about their attitudes on food waste when eating out and showed:

  • 77% of people like being offered entrée size portions to help avoid food waste
  • 71% of customers like it if a business offers a takeaway container
  • Men are more likely than women to cite watching weight as reason for wasting food while eating out.

Our research shows food waste occurs at three key points in the business - storage, preparation and leftovers on customer’s plates. What is also wasted is staff time and disposal costs.

Your Business is Food:

  • starts with a food waste review to work out where food is being wasted – prep, plate or storage
  • gives you two to three actions to reduce food waste in the area it will make the most difference
  • asks you to do a follow up review to see how well you’ve done, before patting yourself on the back

Businesses who take part in Your Business is Food can reduce their food waste by 21%. Some have cut food waste by more than half. Results from the Your Business is Food pilot (2.06MB, PDF) are now available.
