The food and grocery products industry is Australia's largest manufacturing sector, employing more than 315,000 Australians and contributing around 4 per cent to gross domestic product.

Like Minds Backyard works with a local coffee shop to divert food and coffee waste from landfill by feeding it to backyard chickens, worm farms and composting. The company also supports the café to develop seasonal menus, source local produce, choose eco products and packaging, buy in bulk and divert kitchen waste.

Murwillumbah High School is situated on the far north coast of NSW. It has ran a series of workshops funded by North East Waste that focussed on reducing food waste and increasing composting at school. Tweed Shire council donated eight "green" bins for the disposal of inedible food waste. The school is working to reduce food waste in its canteen, kitchens and farm.
