Worm farms are great for small spaces, even balconies and courtyards. Image courtesy of North Sydney Council.
Worm farms are ideal if you live in an apartment or have a limited amount of space in your backyard. Worms turn your food scraps into rich soil-like ‘castings’, great for fertilising house plants, adding to seedling mixes and potting soils, or topdressing around plants. Worm farms are an excellent way to keep your food waste from going to landfill, cutting down greenhouse gas emissions and saving our environment.
Worms are easy to look after and you will be rewarded with one of the best fertilisers that can be applied to your garden.
With the right worm farm you can start with just half a kilogram of worms and within a few months you will have enough worms to consume most of the household food waste for two people.
Special earthworms, called compost worms, work best in a worm farm, as they thrive in the rich, moist conditions. The most common compost worms are Tiger Worms, Red Wrigglers and Indian Blues.
Worm farm containers are available through some local councils, gardening shops and hardware stores.
