Get Food Smart

This month we’re combining our passion for reducing food waste with the work of our colleagues here at the EPA to phase out single-use plastics.

1 November 2022

Did you know that single-use plastic items and packaging make up 60% of all litter in NSW?

Following the ban of lightweight shopping bags on June 1, from today (November 1) this now includes single-use plastic straws, stirrers, cutlery, plates, bowls as well as expanded polystyrene foodware such as clamshell containers, cups, plates, and bowls.

So, at your next picnic, BBQ, or children’s birthday, don’t forget to bring your re-usable plates, cups, straws, and cutlery with you.

By putting an end to the use of many single-use items we will stop an estimated  2.7 billion plastic items from polluting our lands and waterways over the next 20 years.

Using reusable veggie bags at the supermarket is a great way to ‘stop it and swap it’ – and we have freebies to give away this month! Keep an eye out for our competition on Facebook and Instagram and simply share your small win on fighting food waste for a chance to win.

Also this month, we’re focussing on meal planning and perfect portions as part of our new-look, online Food Smart program.

Meal planning has many benefits:

  • Save money – less likely to impulse buy or opt for takeaway
  • Save time – cook once, eat twice! Cook in advance and freeze leftovers for later
  • Minimise food waste – helps keep food out of landfill
  • Reduce stress – takes the stress out of deciding what’s for dinner
  • Improved nutrition – helps you enjoy a healthy, varied and balanced diet.

Get the tools to become a proud planner by signing up for our free Food Smart program – you will find everything you need to be a true waste warrior, and get lots of FREE goodies along the way.

See you online!
