March Into More Savings

‘March Into More Savings’ with us this month as we highlight the financial benefits of reducing food waste.

1 March 2023

It may seem like we only throw out small amounts of food every now and again, but it all adds up.

Households are the largest contributor to food waste with the average NSW household wasting around $2,100 of food each year.

Thankfully, there are lots of ways to save money and make the most of the food you buy:

  • Understanding date labels can save you from throwing out food unnecessarily. Use-by dates relate to safety, so never eat products after these dates. But best-before dates relate to quality so, although products may not be at their best after these dates, they are generally safe to eat. Be sure to check before you chuck – or you might be wasting perfectly good food!

  • Check what you already have in your fridge and pantry before writing a shopping list. Planning your meals with what you already have at home will help reduce waste and save money. You can mix and match produce with leftovers and kitchen staples to create a wide range of meals with only a handful of ingredients.

  • Use seasonal fruit and veggies - they cost less and taste better! See our pocket guide to keep you on track.

And finally, Food Waste Action Week is coming up, from 6-12 March. We’re celebrating the ‘Win Don’t Bin’ theme by sharing tips on how to make the most of the food you buy and cook.
