Bread is a staple in most NSW households. We love it with vegemite for breakfast, wrapped around a sausage, as the perfect accompaniment to soup or as a good old toasted cheese sandwich.

Yet despite our love of bread, a recent report has found Australian households waste 220,000 tonnes of bread each year.

We often waste bread because the loaf has gone stale or mouldy.  But it’s easy to save your bread from the bin by keeping it frozen so it stays fresher for longer, or reviving stale bread by spraying it with water and putting in the oven for 10-15 mins.

Top tips for frozen bread:

  • You can toast bread straight from the freezer; no need to defrost it first.
  • Frozen bread defrosts quickly – leave slices at room temperature for about 15 mins.
  • You can make sandwiches with frozen bread. It’s easier to spread butter on frozen bread and it will defrost by lunchtime.

Our favourite ways to upcycle stale bread:

  • Breadcrumbs – if your loaves or rolls are going stale, whizz them into breadcrumbs using a food processor.
  • Croutons – chop bread into small cubes, drizzle with olive oil, season with salt then bake or fry until golden and crispy.

Many of us think bread is only good for toast, sandwiches and toasties, but it’s a versatile ingredient that can be used as the basis for many different meals.  Craving something sweet? Try our Honey’d French Toast! Oui oui!
