Oz Harvest's Ronni holding the Use It Up tape

#UseItUp

This month we’re paying tribute to our friends at OzHarvest to support their new #UseItUp Campaign

1 November 2021

Launched recently on the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, OzHarvest’s clever campaign is informed by research from BehaviourWorks Australia that showed that using things up is the best single thing we can do to reduce our food waste. It’s also – and this is clever bit - the thing we’re all most likely to do.

This makes sense. Using it up is relatively easy. It’s doable and often results in a very nice meal. Eating up last night’s leftovers is the obvious hack and a quick and delicious treat for the busy worker. But there’s also the option to use up that odd ingredient at the back of the fridge, the last bit of a jar of pesto or that limp looking zucchini in the veggie drawer. Add some pasta and seasonal tomatoes and you’ve got a lovely meal from those bits and pieces in the fridge. Plus you’ve saved yourself the cost of whole new dinner.

To remind us, OzHarvest has also created the Use It Up Tape. It can be used in your fridge, freezer or pantry to mark a shelf for food that needs using up or be stuck on individual items. It’s made from paper, is dishwasher proof and can be recycled or reused. It’s also free! All you need to do is order online and cover the $4 cost of postage.

There are so many tips, tricks, hacks, recipes and words of wisdom to be had from the idea of using things up and we’ll be sharing as many as we can this month through our Facebook and Instagram channels and our new monthly newsletter.

We hope you, our Brains Trust, will chip in too. Share your best tips and recipes for using up ingredients and help others along the way.

Happy eating!
