Winter Wonders

Waste-reducing recipes to warm you up and make the most of fresh, seasonal produce.

1 June 2023

June marks the beginning of winter so this month we’re sharing warming, waste-reducing recipes to make the most of value-for-money, fresh and seasonal produce like potatoes, leeks and oranges.

Who doesn’t like a bowl of comforting leek and potato soup served with crusty bread? Easy to make and filling enough for dinner, we all have our favourite go-to versions, but if you’re looking for something extra creamy, try this cosy version from RecipeTinEats.

The start of June also marks the first anniversary of the ban on lightweight plastic bags in NSW (hooray!) Did you know that plastic packaging and single-use plastic items make up 60% of litter in NSW? We’ve come a long way in the past 12 months, ditching many more items including single-use plastic plates, cutlery and straws.

To celebrate this milestone, we’ve doing not one, but two giveaways this month – for reusable veggie bags and food huggers to keep your produce fresh. Keep an eye on Instagram and Facebook to find out how to win!

And while you’re there, check out what’s cooking in the LFHW kitchen. Warm up your winter cooking by using up that stash of forgotten spices at the back of the cupboard. Then for dessert, we’ve got a waste-busting recipe for orange cupcakes from our friends at Love Food Hate Waste NZ that uses up the entire orange, peel and all.

Reducing food waste never tasted so good!
